If you’re reading this thinking, “My toddler is not about to sit still for pictures,” I promise that you’re not alone. Toddlers are unpredictable. Some are shy, some are wild, some warm up slowly, and some run the studio like they own it. And honestly? All of that is okay.
At GVGT Studio, we photograph toddlers all the time. We don’t expect perfection. We expect kids to be kids. Here’s how to prep your toddler in a way that keeps things calm, comfortable, and actually enjoyable. Talk about the session like it’s something fun.
A few days before your session, casually mention it like it’s no big deal. Something like:
“We’re going to take some pictures and play for a bit.”
“There will be fun things to look at and explore.”
“Mommy/Daddy will be right there with you.”
You don’t need to hype it up too much or give a long explanation. Just keep it light and positive. Toddlers feed off your energy if you’re relaxed, they’re more likely to be too
Comfort over cute (always) I know those outfits are adorable but if your toddler is uncomfortable, it shows fast. Try to pick something that:
Lets them move easily
Doesn’t itch or feel stiff
Feels familiar
Timing can make or break the session. (This might be the most important) If you can, aim for:
A session after a nap
A full belly (snacks help!)
A time of day when your toddler is usually in a good mood
No toddler does their best work when they’re tired or hungry and that’s normal because I struggle with the same issue.
Bring something familiar.
A favorite toy
A small snack
A comfort item is always welcome.
Sometimes it ends up in the photos, sometimes it doesn’t but it almost always helps your child feel safe enough to open up, explore, and settle in.
Let go of “perfect” before you walk in. This is the biggest one. Your toddler does not need to:
Sit still
Smile on command
Follow directions perfectly
Some of the best moments happen in between when they’re moving, laughing, cuddling, or just being curious.
At GVGT Studio, we guide gently and follow your child’s lead. We don’t rush, and we don’t force moments that aren’t there. Trust me to handle the chaos. If your toddler needs time to warm up, that’s fine. If they need breaks, that’s fine. If they’re shy, silly, or everywhere at once that’s fine too.
My job is to meet your child where they are and capture them exactly as they are in this season. From one parent to another.
I’m a mom too, and I know how stressful toddler photos can feel before you arrive. But every session reminds me of the same thing these stages don’t last. The wiggles. The curiosity. The way they cling to you one minute and run off the next. That’s what you’ll want to remember.
Book your toddler photo session with GVGT Studio. Whether your toddler is outgoing, cautious, or full of energy, we’ll create a session that feels safe, relaxed, and real.
